Birth.

On my way to a job the traffic was at a standstill. Traffic here during normal hours is like peak rush hour in MN... times 5. So you can imagine what a standstill looks like.

You know why?

A taxi was on the side of the road. Inside a woman was giving birth.

Yes. I does happen in real life.

I really couldn't believe the fact that not only was this woman giving birth in a taxi, but on the side of the road with thousands of people passing by and staring. I know I wasn't the only one trying to get a picture.

I can't imagine that. How horrible. I often think about medical emergencies in places like this, where the traffic is so dense. Every time I see an emergency vehicle, they are moving at the same pace as traffic, it's hard to part for them. I get anxiety knowing that someone actually needs them at that moment and they can't even move.

Anyways back to birthing:
Talking about this at my job yesterday lead us to the discussion about people born on airplanes. They are supposed to be "World Citizens" allowed to fly for free anytime they want as well as have education and expenses paid for by the airlines. How awesome would that be? The worst flight experience ever (for your initial flight) but there are perks. Apparently for British Airways one birth per year is average.

Citizenship is a discussion I go into almost everyday here. So many people are eager to get a duel citizenship. Mostly Americans and Canadians trying to get European passports to work. Europeans to get American passports to live/work there....

I didn't know this before but every male Turkish citizen is required to go to Army for 6/12 months. And in Israel every citizen man or woman is required to for 18 months. In order to get out of it you need to move to a place for 3 years and then pay a fine.

The things you learn. I recommend the website HowStuffWorks for learning a little more.

Some Thoughts.

I haven’t figured out the lyra yet. I’m having instant coffee in a mug with some of the worst carrot cake I have ever had in my life. At the airport. It was 14.50 Lyra. The exchange rate of euro to lyra is 1 euro is 1.92 lyra. So nearly half. But I have dollars which means that for every 1.42 dollars that is 1 euro.

I can’t figure out if I’m getting scammed because I hear that the euro is falling. I like to use the phrase “the euro is falling”. It makes me feel like I’m one of those financial investors that go on dateline or something. Economically savvy.

Either way this coffee sucks and that’s all that I have to say .

I’m bummed out about this carrot cake because I actually really love carrot cake especially when the cream cheese frosting is really good. The woman behind the register sounded so excited about it. I was looking at loafs. A loaf of grape bread to be exact. And I looked unconvinced so she throws in a “We have a CARROT CAKE!” line.

And I was like AWESOME! YES! I’ll have a CARROT CAKE!

I felt like Jesus said “Eat carrot cake Arielle” So I did.

And it comes out beautifully too. Cute little frosted carrot on the top. Glaze over the top…

As I was spitting it out, I pondered: Why do we ask advice from the people working at a place? Does working at Denny’s really mean that the waitress knows more about food and what I’ll like? They DON’T KNOW. Half the time they recommend things because they remember people ordering it a lot.

The other day for example, I was at a restaurant and a guy says to me. “That’s my favorite salad”

And I was about to order it and I realized…. This man is recommending salad. Who the hell recommends a salad!? I mean really. Lettuce. Lettuce is satisfying? It’s your favorite?!

And you know what. I trusted him, because he had these words to say over a salad. It must be one hell of a salad.

Guess what?

It wasn’t.

It tasted like a salad.

On a Side Note: When you google "boring salad" under images almost 1.5 million results pop up. I find that funny.

Wednesday

Alright so I’m at the airport.

Day so far has been jam packed with too much adventure. One thing I can’t stand is being late, and being rushed with things like getting ready, packing and anything dealing with the airport….

So I had to wake up at 6 am in order to be ready for a van to pick me up and take me to the job where I am supposed to get off at 2 at the latest. I have to bring my luggage with because I am supposed to go straight to the airport after the job and be off on my way to Bodrum. I’m just saying this is not a good idea. People here are an average of an hour late and when then say “2 minutes” they really mean 45.

Surprisingly the van to pick me up was not only on time in the morning but was actually early which really messed with my ‘rushing to finish packing everything at the last minute’ plan.

We take a car across the river to the Asian side of Istanbul and get to this beautiful 4 story house over looking the river. Breakfast was laid out…. Which was great but after breakfast we just sat… and sat….and sat… We sat for well over two hours. And if it seems like an exaggeration I finished a book over the course of my time there. I got there at 8 am and at around 11 I decide to go see if we are going to start working because I have to leave at 1. Well I just end up sitting inside. I’ve finished ¾ of the brand new book that I bought. Which is actually pretty good. I’ll start doing a book review section maybe except for the fact that 90% of the books that I read are romance novels.

ANYWAYS. 11 I move inside because we were eating outside on the balcony.

Around 1 I start going into makeup, which lasted 30 minutes total. Then I wait some more.

I had absolutely no clue what I what we were doing by the way. They just told me to bring mom looking clothes, which in all honesty is not exactly the type of jobs you want to work at 20. Excuse me…21.

SIDE NOTE: No one speaks English. No ONE. The little girl who was acting as my daughter knew how to say “Hi” “Thank you” and “My name is” . That’s the reason why I have no clue what seems to be going on, which is a common trend with my jobs.

So at around 2:30 a woman shows up who speaks English and I get to tell her how I was supposed to leave at 1 because I have a flight to catch. Who’s reply was, “We were told 6” Not Good.

But she tells me that we are filming a commercial for some chocolate candy. They have a chocolate filling and little bears printed on the front. Actually I don’t know if anyone will remember those little Lotte Koala Bear treats that we used to have when we were little that was this graham cookie that was square shape with chocolate or strawberry filling. I was telling someone about those like 2 months ago and how I was craving them, so this was actually excellent news that I get to film eating these delicious treats.

I’m only in the last scene where my son, daughter and I all are eating treats and laughing our heads off because it was so delicious.

I mean really, this is my dream job.

I have this problem with serving size and treats. I always end up eating about 4 packages because they are so good, like gushers. You just can’t get enough.

Turns out… you can get enough. I found this out the hard way. What seems like a delicious treat for the first 10 minutes turns into hell. I can’t even begin to describe how sickening it was getting these stupid little things shoved down your throat for an hour. And when I say sickening I mean that I actually threw up. Who knew.

I couldn’t even eat them in the end. We would cut and the kids and I would spit them out. I can’t even look at them.

So anyways all I know is it’s now 3 o’clock, we have hardly filmed anything. I think one take and 6 practices.

I have a flight that I need to catch with no working phone, no internet, no driver to get me there, no ticket, no confirmation number, I don’t know what airline I am with, LET ALONE which airport because there are two here.

After getting one of the guys to call my agency, he says that in 10 minutes we are going to leave and my driver is going to meet me at the airport with my ticket. 1 hour after the phone call I am running half dressed down 3 flights of stairs with my suitcase to jump into a car. We are 40 minutes from the airport. It’s 4:15. My flight leaves at 5. But I was told “Don’t worry, Jamahl is a really good driver… he’ll get you there in 20 minutes” I felt sick again…. But it wasn’t from the bears.

I have now driven 200 km an hour down an airport listening to techno music while the driver chain-smokes. An entire package.

He had the emergency lights flashing the whole time weaving in and out of traffic. I was actually praying to just not die at that point.

We get to the airport I am running with Mr. Ibrahim through all the people, we rush up to the desk and of course we can’t check in because even thought the flight hasn’t left and I’m sitting here watching people board my flight right now…. check in shuts off 30 minutes before boarding. I got another ticket for 7:45 and so now I’m just chillin for a couple hours. There’s a sale at swatch.
